Detoxification 101: Toxins & Your Liver

The introduction of all these improvements and the polluting by-products of our technological advances have introduced an array of toxins in our food that our bodies are not equipped to process and are first encountered in our digestive tract. To add insult to injury, we ignore this situation and then treat the symptoms of it with medications that further complicate our already over-taxed metabolism.  One of the most serious effects of this is compromised Liver Function.

Approximately three thousand chemicals are added to our food. Thousands more, in the form of emulsifiers and preservatives, are used in processing and storage.  And more thousands are in our cosmetics, cleaning and garden supplies.

The importance of the liver in Detoxification:

Why is your liver so important? Its major role is to be the watchdog and filter everything your digestive system sends its way, in order for your body to make use of it.    If your liver is overwhelmed by too many toxins, it becomes clogged and ineffective, unable to manage its original responsibility for fat metabolism and getting nutrients into the bloodstream.  It's easy, then, to see how un-eliminated toxins recirculate through your blood, essentially affecting every organ and function in your body.
The continuous presence of these toxins leads to accelerated aging and promotes the onset of degenerative diseases.

Liver function is measured by a sulfate/creatinine ratio which assesses  its ability to remove toxic compounds.
  • If your toxic exposure level is high and your ability to eliminate these poisons is compromised (bad ratio), simple nutritional supplementation can reverse a dangerous situation.
  • If your ability to detoxify is strong (good ratio), then simple avoidance of obvious sources of toxic exposure will help keep it that way.

Avoidance of toxic exposure can be as simple as changing out your cleaning supplies, avoiding over-the-counter medications and seeking out organic foods.  Perhaps you just need to eliminate the caffiene or alchohol.  A thorough history and screening will get you the answers you need.

Without the Foundation Of Good Digestive Health, the LIVER cannot do its job of filtering and assimilating the nutrients we consume.

Do you have any of these symptoms?
  • Hormonal Imbalances – mood swings, abnormal hair loss or growth, inability to sleep
  • Weight Gain – and a stubborn resistance to losing it, no matter what you do.
  • Fatigue
  • Depression -persistent lethargy, sadness and lack of interest.
  • Compromised Immune System -resulting in ...
  • Frequent Colds
  • Infections
  • Allergies
  • Joint Or Muscle Pain
  • Digestive Difficulties
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating
  • Indigestion
  • Chemical Sensitivity

Environmental factors affecting our overall health are impossible to completely avoid.  But Cancer and Heart Disease arrived with the process of refining sugar, preserving food in cans and desk jobs.  High-fat diets are NOT the culprit in obesity and it is mistake to target only that.  Inactivity coupled with refined sugars, pollutants, exposure to bad water and other contaminants is what sends us well along the road to obesity and the ruination of our overall health.Poor lifestyle choices take a toll on your health.

Do any of these sound familiar?
  • Frequent skipped meals – are you too "busy" or is this your diet method of choice?
  • Regular consumption of refined sugar – it's everywhere, not only in processed foods, desserts, candy or sodas.
  • Chug Caffeine (coffee, tea or colas) to get going and keep going
  • Too much or too little exercise
  • Poor sleep habits –less than 7 hours of sleep each night, no routine, frequent awakening at night, need for mid-day naps.

Despite our best efforts to tackle weight loss, nutrition, and fitness, most of us still miss the fundamental issue and therefore, experience disappointing outcomes. The underlying health issues need to be focused on through detoxification, hormonal re-balancing, and sound nutrition.   Once these are undertaken, weight loss follows and "feeling better" is the natural result.

We've all heard horror stories about the mercury in our fillings, poison in our water and parasites in our pillows.  It's almost impossible to sift fact from fiction...if you believe them all, you'd starve yourself to death in a plastic bubble.  But it is certainly practical and prudent to get the answers to your particular physical and mental health with a thorough investigation into what the contributing factors are in your particular case.

Lead paint is definitively implicated in mental retardation and neurological disorders and we know that exposure to certain chemicals can lead to a variety of cancers.  They don't manufacture lead paint anymore and most dentists have stopped using mercury in fillings.  What you probably can't know, is exactly what's in your tap water or what they sprayed on those nectarines from Chile.

What you can do is get a complete toxicity screening, digestive function diagnosis and evaluation of your liver function. This is what you will get through my practice.  Once completed, we will know how to clean the machine (Detoxify),  resolve the weaknesses and build on your body's strengths without adding more chemicals and medications.

THE FOUNDATION OF GOOD HEALTH

The foundation of good health lies in proper digestive function.  All other health factors can be undermined if you don't digest and absorb nutrients well. Assimilation of vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids from the foods you eat and the supplements you take is required for optimum health. Any therapeutic program you may use will be of limited value without good digestive function.

It used to be a fairly simple matter to feed yourself clean, fresh food; the soil was uncontaminated and the plants that grew on it absorbed the minerals and produced all the nutrients they were intended to.  There weren't any pesticides or pollutants contaminating the water, soil and air that supported our grain fields, orchards and vegetable gardens or the domesticated animals that consumed the plants grown in them. The meat we ate did not contain growth hormones or antibiotics. Refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, and all those unpronounceable chemicals on that bag of chips simply did not exist. The chips didn't exist!
We weren't drinking dye in Kool-Aid and "Fruit" drinks or eating paraffin (waxy coating) on our apples and cucumbers.  Did you know paraffin is a product of crude oil and is composed of methane molecules? In Great Britain, it is synonymous with kerosene.  And here you've been eating it every day in all those healthy salads you make.

There may not have been the variety a truly healthy body needs in the old days, but at least we knew what we were eating.  We now have access to the variety, but in exchange, settled for artificially preserved and contaminated food...or things that really aren't food at all!  Have you ever wondered what "fat free sour cream" or "non-dairy creamer” actually is?  Read the label and you STILL won't know.  The price we pay is a contaminated body, cancers, allergies, compromised digestive function and a clogged, sluggish liver.  Kind of like the lint filter in your dryer...once clogged up, it can't even take the water out.
  • Wouldn't you be thrilled to find out if your digestive system could be at the bottom of your unease about how you feel every day?  And that you can fix it...safely and effectively, without medications?
  • Wouldn't it be great to know that by addressing that, you would also be healing your Liver, the largest organ in your body and the only one that can regenerate itself?
